Dental Crowns

Crowns solve a variety of dental problems, from repairing damaged teeth to making a misshapen or discolored tooth more attractive.

More importantly, they strengthen and protect a tooth from further damage, often preventing the total loss of the tooth.

Are you concerned about a tooth? The experts at Perfect Smiles California in Chula Vista, CA, are here to point you in the right direction.

Do You Have a Dental Emergency?

If your tooth is broken, chipped, or fractured, it is important to see your dentist as soon as possible. Otherwise, your weakened tooth could suffer further damage or become infected, requiring a more involved dentistry procedure like a root canal or tooth extraction.

We're So Confident of Our Dental Work

We Guarantee It for Two Years

At Perfect Smiles California, serving Chula Vista, National City, and greater San Diego, Drs. David Garate and Myriam V. Falcon use state-of-the-art technology and create dental crowns using porcelain and advanced dental materials to ensure your lasting satisfaction.

Problems Crowns Can Solve

Dental crowns are versatile dental treatments and ideal for solving a variety of dental issues, both cosmetic and restorative

What is a dental crown? In plain talk, it's a "cap" that surrounds a damaged or unattractive tooth down to the gumline, giving it strength and restoring its natural appearance. We customize our work to your unique needs so you walk out with a stronger, more beautiful tooth.

Do I Need a Crown?

Icon of cracked tooth

Do you have a cracked or broken tooth?

Like protective armor, a dental crown will strengthen your tooth and shield it from further damage.

Icon of tooth cavity

Do you have a tooth with a large cavity?

When there isn’t enough tooth remaining to use a filling, a dental crown can be used to cover the entire tooth to protect it and restore its appearance.

Icon of sharp tooth

Is your tooth severely worn down?

A dental crown can restore height to the tooth to allow for easier eating and to make the tooth stronger.

Icon of discolored tooth

Is your tooth discolored or oddly shaped?

Crowns are also used in cosmetic dentistry to mask teeth that are unattractive and take away from your smile.

Icon of chipped tooth

What else are dental crowns used for?

They are also used after root canal treatment and to replace missing teeth, either in dental bridges or attached to dental implants

A Long-Lasting Solution

Porcelain crowns have a 94% success rate at 5 years

*According to research published in The Journal of Prosthetic Dentistry.

Will My Crown Look Like My Other Teeth?

Yes! At Perfect Smiles of California, we strive to be, well, perfect. And that means achieving the most natural-looking dental crowns possible. We offer a variety of dental materials, from porcelain to zirconia, for our restorations, carefully selecting the material that is best suited for your situation.

The Art & Science of Selecting Crown Material

Advanced Dental Materials
Offer Beauty & Performance

Porcelain and ceramic are popular materials for dental crowns, but Perfect Smiles California also offers some of the most advanced restoration materials for enhanced beauty and performance. For example, we might recommend BruxZir® Full-Strength Zirconia for a back molar due to its incredible strength. If you need a restoration on a front tooth, the beautiful esthetics of a crown made of Ivoclar Vivadent's IPS e.max® Prime Esthetic might be a perfect choice. IPS e.max Prime Esthetic reflects light like natural enamel on a tooth and blends beautifully with surrounding teeth.

Weighing Pros & Cons When
Designing Custom Crowns

How do our advanced dental materials compare to other options? Cheaper resin crowns offer a lifelike appearance, but because resin is a less durable material a resin crown is much more likely to wear down over time. Porcelain-fused-to-metal crowns offer more strength, but the metal can show as a dark area near the gumline. While these options might be right for some patients in certain circumstances, they don't combine strength and beauty in the same way as advanced materials.

Take a Look At How Dental Crowns Are Applied

1. The tooth will be reshaped to make room for the crown. 2. Your custom crown is placed over the tooth and secured with dental cement.

The Traditional Dental Crown Procedure What to Expect

We know a visit to the dentist is difficult to fit into your busy day. To better serve our patients' varied needs, our dentists at Perfect Smiles California offer both same-day and traditional dental crowns, which typically take two appointments at our Chula Vista practice.

We use the finest materials, including porcelain, zirconia, and IPS e.max crowns.

Consultation

The dentist will examine your mouth to determine if a dental crown is the correct dental treatment. If so, the doctor will go over what materials, such as porcelain or zirconia, will be suitable for your procedure.

First Visit

Damaged or decayed parts of the tooth will be removed and it will be shaped to make room for the crown. Using a Carestream digital scanner, the dentist will then make a 3D digital impression of your tooth so the dental crown can be designed, which typically takes two weeks. We will fit you with a temporary crown to wear until your next visit.

Second Visit

The temporary crown is removed and the dentist will check the fit of the new, permanent crown, adjusting it as needed. Once you are comfortable with the fit and look, the permanent crown will be cemented in place.

Same-Day Crowns Are Available

Same-day dental crowns allow you to complete all of these steps in one visit instead of two. Using our advanced CEREC system, we are able to create a digital impression of your tooth and send that information directly to our milling machine to create a permanent crown while you wait.

Missing a Tooth?  Restore It With an Implant-Supported Crown

Dental crowns don't just repair teeth: they can replace them, too.

Our dental practice serving Chula Vista, National City, and greater San Diego, CA, offers implant-supported crowns that can restore a tooth from root to crown, a feat unmatched by any other tooth-replacement method.

Implants are titanium rods that are placed in the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. When topped with a crown, dental implants not only fill the gap in your smile but they also stimulate bone growth in the jaw to keep it strong.

Implant-supported restorations are the most comprehensive method of restoring lost teeth, and are an excellent dentistry option for qualified candidates. Contact us to learn more or request a free implant consultation.

How to Care for Your Dental Crown

Permanent crowns do not need any special care. Simply follow good oral hygiene practices by brushing your teeth twice a day and flossing daily. And, as with regular teeth, avoid chewing on hard foods or objects, such as ice, pens, and popcorn hulls.

If you are getting a traditional crown there will be a two-week period when you will have a temporary crown placed on your tooth while the permanent one is being created. Because the temporary is held in place with temporary cement, you will want to take a few precautions during the interim.

You will be able to chew food and enjoy meals during this period, however, you should avoid foods that are hard, sticky, or tough, which could cause the temporary crown to fall out. In addition, you should:

  • Floss the area gently and remove the floss by sliding it out sideways.
  • Brush carefully to keep the area clean but not disturb the temporary crown.
  • In the unlikely event the temporary comes off, please call the dentist to have it glued back in place or a new one created.
